Energy Payment and Pre-payment meters

Do you have a pre-payment meter?

Keep an eye out for a letter, email or text from your energy supplier!

If you have a non-smart pre-payment meter, meaning you top up your gas and/or electricity with a key or card not via an app or online, you will receive a letter, email or text with a voucher code to take to your local post office, the voucher code will enable the post office to apply the government payment to your gas and/or electricity key/card.

Remember to take with you

  • your gas/electricity key/card

  • photographic ID or utility bill

  • the letter or email or text containing the voucher code

They will not be able to apply the payment without the items above.

You have 3 months to claim the voucher code after issue.

Be wary of suspicious emails or texts, scammers are likely to take advantage of this situation, knowing that people will be expecting a text or email from energy suppliers, if you are unsure, do not click on any links and call your provider to check that the text or email is legitimate.

If you have a smart prepayment meter your energy payment should be automatically applied.

If you do not have a prepayment meter, the amount should be automatically deducted from your bill.
