60 seconds with… Sophie Walsh
From contending with funding restrictions to hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and wonder, our Early Education Manager for 1st Place at Lorrimore Square tells us all.
Tell us about yourself.
I am the Early Education Manager for 1st Place at Lorrimore Square. I am passionate about childcare and have worked in this industry for 16 years. It all started when I was at secondary school when I went on a two-week placement at a primary school. I spent time in the nursery and reception classes, and loved the idea of giving children the autonomy to enquire and think for themselves. I was intrigued by how children learn and why they do the things they do. This led me to study Health and Social Care, which gave me the opportunity to work with different professionals in a variety of care settings.
During my studies, I continued to be fascinated by how children learn and develop, and decided to complete a Level 3 in Childcare. Since then, I have never looked back. Working with children and their families, and delivering high quality care is my passion.
Tell us about your role.
From having breakfast with the children to greeting parents and building dens at Forest School, no two days are the same. Wherever the day takes me, I love that when I come back, there are always lots of inquisitive faces peering through my window! Our children are so curious about the world and their favourite question is ‘why?’. It really makes my day when the children confidently ask ‘why?’ and I see the anticipation in their faces as they wonder what the answer will be. I get to be a part of their learning journey and that is truly special.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Managing a nursery in an industry contending with funding restrictions and ever-changing policies and legislation, brings new challenges every day. Running a successful nursery demands hard work, flexibility, commitment and a real passion for childcare.
What do you like most about your job?
I really enjoy working with the children and their families, working in partnership with them to make a difference to their lives. Every day, the children continue to surprise me. Seeing the children develop and being part of their learning is a privilege.
What makes 1st Place unique compared to other nurseries?
During my career, I have seen many different learning styles and settings. At 1st Place, we are unique because we are inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. We foster a culture where children are valued and respected as individuals, researchers and creative thinkers. At 1st Place, we recognise and encourage the many ways that children desire to communicate and make sense of the world. We allow the children to take the lead in their learning and let them explore hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and wonder.
Tell us something surprising about yourself.
I worked in the cardiology unit at Lewisham Hospital. I have also been horseback riding in the mountains in Cuba!
