Thing of the Week - Woodland Wandering

As part of the launch of 50 Things in Southwark, we are focusing on 1 of the 50 activities in this amazing app. Next is ‘Woodland wandering?’

Woods are like “magical playgrounds where children can have exciting adventures” (Woodlands Trust 2018)

Woodlands are just as beautiful in the winter as in the warmer seasons, woodland walks can be so exciting for children, they’re full of interesting things and noises.

Maybe collect some items to make some Christmas decorations on your walk too, pinecones are a great decoration for trees, you could paint them together, or even make one into an owl using feathers and some cardboard feet.

If your little one isn’t so keen on going for walks, you could make a game out of it, try playing eye spy or pretending you’re meeting animals like the mouse in the story ‘The Gruffalo’.

Head to the Southwark council website for information on local woodland walk and other outdoor spaces in Southwark. https://www.southwark.gov.uk/parks-and-open-spaces

For more information on this activity including how to do it, the benefits, top tips and resources, download the free 50 Things app from Google Play or the Apple Store.
