Collage making at home
One of our favourite nursery activities is creating a collage using different fabrics. At home, you can use unwanted clothes or any other type of material that you no longer use. While making a collage, your child will be developing their communication and language skills, practising their hand-eye coordination and improving their understanding of different media. This is also a good opportunity to talk about recycling and how things can be used in different ways.
Equipment:
You will need some fabric or old, unwanted clothes, scissors, children’s scissors (if available), glue, paper, cardboard, paper plates or any other kind of material that you can glue onto your fabric.
Method:
Cut the fabric into small pieces or shapes. Make them varied and different sizes. If possible, give your child the opportunity to do some cutting as well, facilitating and helping them when necessary. Try to use different colours and textures, which will make your collage look more interesting.
Ask your child if they have an idea of what they would like to transform into a collage. Then support them in putting it together by guiding them and asking questions.
Avoid giving them the answer straight away. Take a step back and support them to think for themselves and find ways of getting the result that they want. You may be surprised at how much those little minds are capable of!
