Southwark Black History Walk

Black History Month

1st October – 31st October  2022

First marked in the UK in October 1987, as part of African Jubilee Year, Black History Month is a recognition of the heritage, culture, and achievements of Black Britons. The theme for Black History Month 2022 is ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words.’

“Black people are often given the double burden of experiencing racism and discrimination, and then being expected to fix it. Hopefully, by making the theme of this year’s Black History Month magazine and website Time for Change: Action Not Words’ we can come together to make a change for the better.” - BHM

To mark the start of Black History Month we’d like to share with you a Black History walk through Southwark.

Stephen Bourne, a historian who has written many black British history books has created a Black History walk through Southwark. On the walk, discover places and plaques remembering notable black people in history such as the co-founder of Notting Hill Carnival, creative artists and campaigners for equality.

Some children from our nurseries will be visiting landmarks on the walk, we look forward to sharing photos with you.
