1st Place to feature in Channel 4 Dispatches programme 'Born Homeless'

1st Place Children and Parents' Centre is appearing in a new Channel 4 Dispatches programme 'Born Homeless' which explores the issue of pregnant mothers who are homeless.

In a ground-breaking survey of midwives from across the UK who collectively care for over 15,000 women per month, Channel 4 Dispatches with the Royal College of Midwives found that almost all of them had seen a pregnant room who was homeless in the past 6 months.

The programme follows the plight of three mothers with no place to call home.

Nicki Howard, 1st Place Director, said: "Homelessness is an increasing issue for the families we work with. 25% of the borough's temporary accommodation lies within our immediate reach area, and the difficulties families experience as a result of not having a permanent home form a significant part of the work our staff and partner agencies.

1st Place and other Children and Family Centres in Southwark support families with children under 5. There are times in life when families may need a little extra help, and our Community Family Workers offer the emotional and practical support that may be needed, and a friendly approach that helps families find the right solutions. There are also drop-in sessions and courses where families can get advice about their child’s development, from our team and other professionals."

1st Place would like to thank our families and staff who helped with the production of this programme.

'Born Homeless: Channel 4 Dispatches' airs tonight (Monday 18 November) on Channel 4 at 8pm.
